IF: WIngs

I wasn't sure what to do for this so being interested in historical illustration decided to do an image of an  aircraft. I decided on the Spitfire, one of the  best looking planes ever built and one  which also has the very distinct wing shape.

With the subject of myth here is one of the most well know creatures from Greek mythology, the winged horse Pegasus.

IF: Edge

Been slacking on the illustration Friday lately so this is just a quick one I did for this week’s topic and a chance to experiment with a graphic look. This was a 3D render that was later post worked to death! :)

IF: Book

Nothing too clever here just a rather wobbly stack of books :)

IF: Tall

Well after another long break form illustration Friday Seeing the topic I thought I’d get back into it with this image I’ve just completed as it seemed appropriate.

Yes back to the dinosaurs.

This is a Jobaria a sauropod dinosaur discovered in the Sahara Desert in 1997. It is thought to have been about 18 metres long. Not the largest of the sauropods but still pretty tall:)

Torvosaurus

Here’s my latest Dinosaur image. This is a Torvosaurus on the prowl with a group of Ornitholestes in the foreground.

The Torvosaurus tanneri was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic period, about 145 million years ago, in North America and Portugal.

It lived alongside the more famous Allosaurus which it equalled and even exceeded in size at up to 11 meters (36ft) in length.

It was related to the earlier Megalosaurus but was more advanced.

The Ornitholestes was a small theropod of the same period and location. It was about 2 meters (6.5 feet) long.

IF: Grounded

I saw a program a while ago part of which featured an inland sea (can't remember where it was) that had dried up leaving behind the boats and ships stranded in the desert. It was all very surreal. This also gave me an excuse to illustrate one of my favorite things, old abandoned and rusty stuff.

IF:Stripes

A bit of a last minute entry here but I came up with this idea that seems to fit the bill.

IF:Ferocious

I’ve been watching the new BBC series Planet Dinosaur over the last few weeks. I think its pretty good really and they are at least trying to backup their claims with actual finds which is more than can be said for some programs.

Anyway in the latest episode they had the Majungasaurus. As I haven't had time to do a new image this week I thought I'd put my version up, an image I did a while ago.

The Majungasaurus was an abelisaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Madagascar about 70 – 65 million years. It was between 6 to 7 metres long though it is thought that the specimens found are not fully grown and that an adult Majungasaurus could reach up to 8 metres.

Well he looks pretty ferocious to me :)

IF: Influence

The first thing that came to mind for this was the evil box of influence that sits innocently in the corner of most peoples homes. Though it may have some potential for good it also influences people for the worst and as been a major tool in the dumbing down of society. It also, if we let it steals a lot of our time that would be better spent doing something else.

Rather than just any TV I thought I'd do a nice Orwellian one, someone who foresaw the possibility of screens being everywhere and constantly bombarding us with trivia and propaganda wherever we are.

IF: Imperfect

I grew up watching the old black and white horror films with the likes of Boris Karloff , Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney and I still think they capture something that more modern horror films lack.

I'd been thinking of doing an actual painting of this classic image of Karloff's famous interpretation of Frankenstein's monster but I won't have time for that this week so here's a digital version which I thought fit in well with this weeks subject.

IF: Gesture

This is an image I started on the subject of mediation but I think it also fits in with this weeks topic. It also turned into another experiment with dramatic light and natural media effects. You never know I might even get the real paints out again eventually!:)

IF: Launch

Well seeing his weeks subject I automatically thought of a space rocket, but rather than just do some generic one I thought I'd delve into my TV viewing past. I was always a big fan of the Gerry Anderson "Supermarionation" series and remember watching them all the time as a kid. There still fun now actually but the strings become more noticeable as you get older :)

Thunderbirds which ran from (1964–1966) was one of the most famous. My favorite was always Thunderbird 3 for some reason, It really seemed like a good retro rocket design so here's my take on it.

IF: Shadows

I've always been a fan of Chiaroscuro and dramatic light and shade. I've been experimenting with the effect in some images and recently did this which I thought would fit this weeks topic.

This is a Deltadromeus. yes its back to the dinosaurs for this one. seemed like as good a subject as any to practice the dramatic light on :) It was a large theropod dinosaur from Northern Africa late Cretaceous about 95 million years ago. It had long, slender hind limbs for its size, suggesting that it was a swift runner.

IF: Bottled

The topic for this weeks illustration Friday is bottled. Wasn't sure what to do so in the end I just did a variety of colourful bottles. Something a bit different form my usual work.:)

IF: Duet

A bit of a last minute entry this week. I had a few ideas but not much time then came up with this.

A pair of Parasaurolophus. This was a large Hadrosaurid dinosaur from the late cretaceous of New Mexico and north America.

For a long time it was believed that this dinosaur lived an amphibious lifestyle perhaps using its crest as a type of snorkel! This is now known to be completely wrong and Parasaurolophus was a land animal living in herds.

Three different species are recognised each with differences in their head crests though it is also possible that this indicated differences in the sex of the animal.

It is now thought that the crests were used for display and in the production of sounds for warnings, mating and general communication.

IF: Warning

Well I'm back after a break. Seeing the topic for this week is warning this lighthouse image seemed appropriate. Some of the most impressive warning structures we've built throughout the ages.

IF: Chicken

The first IF of the new year for me. I gave up trying to come up with a clever idea for this and just thought I'd do a colourful chicken. Also a chance to practice the 'digital natural media' look.
